Nigeria on the first day of 2021 recorded five more deaths from COVID-19 and 1074 new infections, making total cases confirmed to be 88587.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control made the disclosure on Friday, while warning Nigerians on the insensitivity of the virus  to their celebration need.

The agency revealed the tally of discharged patients on Friday to be 615, of which 459 community recoveries were from Lagos and 156 patients from Kaduna.

Meanwhile the new infections were recorded from 15 states according to the agency, with 74373 cases discharged and 1294 deaths recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

NCDC Director General, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu,.in a tweet on Friday said: “We understand Nigerian’s urge to relax on compliance measures for #COVID19 prevention after a difficult year. The challenge is this virus doesn’t recognise human necessities to celebrate.

“Therefore we’ve sustained the response & must collectively #TakeResponsibility” 459 community recoveries in Lagos State and 156 community recoveries in Katsina State managed in line with guidelines”, he stated.

A breakdown of cases by state is as follows: Lagos (642), Kaduna (92), Rivers (78), FCT (66), Gombe (66), Kano (35), Ogun (31), Katsina (22), Plateau (20), Abia (7), Niger (4), Oyo (4), Akwa Ibom (3), Delta (2), and Osun (2)
